The earth is reliant on clean water, and we cannot live without it. In some parts of the world, women spend as much as six hours a day carrying water to their communities.
Abeles’ artwork contains video footage presented as a comparative pair. On the left is the video playing as real time, and on the right, is the same footage scaled to represent 1 minute slowed to 6 hours, the time it takes for these courageous women to carry the water on foot.
A large-scale video wall version of this artwork was originally created in 2012 for the exhibition (re-)cycles of Paradise curated by the international curatorial group ARTPORT_making waves. This was shown at LACE (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions) in cooperation with swissnex San Francisco. The larger installation contains 20 pairs of videos, all pertaining to water use.
The 2017 version is currently on view at Red Hen Press in Pasadena, CA in a show curated by Rachel X Hobreigh.
